How Humidity, Dew Point, and Condensation Affect Epoxy Installation
High humidity does not automatically prevent epoxy installation. The real concern is whether condensation forms on the concrete or on the uncured epoxy.
Humidity Is Only Part of the Picture
Many installers become concerned when they see a high relative humidity forecast before applying an epoxy coating. While humidity is certainly an important factor, it is often misunderstood.
Relative humidity tells you how much moisture is present in the air compared to the maximum amount the air can hold at its current temperature.
High humidity by itself does not automatically mean an epoxy installation will fail. Many successful epoxy installations are completed under relatively humid conditions.
The real question is whether that moisture leaves the air and condenses onto the surface being coated.
Understanding Dew Point
Every combination of air temperature and relative humidity has a corresponding dew point.
When a concrete floor is at or below the dew point temperature, moisture from the air can condense on its surface.
Sometimes this condensation is obvious. Other times the surface may appear dry while a microscopic film of moisture has already formed.
That invisible layer of moisture can interfere with proper epoxy adhesion.
Why Concrete Temperature Matters More Than Air Temperature
One of the most common mistakes is paying attention only to the air temperature.
Concrete changes temperature much more slowly than air. A building may warm quickly during the day while the slab remains significantly cooler.
Under those conditions, the concrete can remain below the dew point even though the room feels comfortable.
For this reason, the temperature of the concrete is often more important than the temperature of the air when determining whether conditions are suitable for epoxy application.
What Can Happen If Condensation Is Present?
Applying epoxy over condensation or allowing condensation to form on uncured epoxy may result in problems such as:
- Poor adhesion
- Surface blushing
- Amine blush
- Cloudiness or whitening
- Surface defects
- Reduced long-term performance
These problems become more likely as moisture increases or remains present during application and cure.
Practical Guidelines
Before beginning an installation:
- Verify that the concrete surface is dry.
- Measure both the air temperature and the concrete temperature.
- Determine the dew point whenever humidity is high or weather conditions are changing.
- Continue monitoring conditions throughout application and the initial cure.
Rain outside does not automatically prevent epoxy installation. Many interior applications proceed successfully during rainy weather, provided the concrete remains dry and above the dew point.

Keeping the concrete surface dry and above the dew point is one of the simplest and most effective ways to improve the likelihood of a successful epoxy installation.
