Planning, Preparation, Mixing, Application & Cure

This field checklist summarizes the major principles covered in Parts 1 and 2 of the Epoxy.com definitive installation guide. It is intended to support—but not replace—the product label, Product Data Sheet, Safety Data Sheet, project specifications, and product-specific installation instructions.

1. Before You Begin

Read the product label. Read the Product Data Sheet (PDS). Read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). Verify the correct products have been delivered. Verify quantities are sufficient to complete the installation. Confirm the selected system is appropriate for the intended service. Review project specifications and special instructions. Resolve questions before opening the first container.

2. Plan the Installation

Walk the entire project before mixing. Determine where the installation will begin. Determine where the installation will end. Plan your exit route. Identify drains, doorways, joints, columns, and other critical details. Determine stopping points if work must be interrupted. Plan how the finished floor will be protected during cure.

3. Surface Preparation

Surface is structurally sound. Surface preparation is complete. Repairs have been completed. Surface profile is appropriate for the system. Surface has been thoroughly vacuumed. Dust, debris, oil, grease, curing compounds, sealers, and contamination have been removed. Surface is dry. No condensation is present.

4. Environmental Conditions

Substrate temperature verified. Material temperature verified. Air temperature verified. Humidity checked. Dew point considered. Conditions meet product requirements.

5. Prepare the Work Area and Protect the Crew

Everything that should not receive epoxy is protected. Mixing area is protected with plastic and cardboard where practical. Protective coverings are secured and cannot move independently. Ventilation requirements have been reviewed. Safety glasses with side shields are available and being worn. Latex, nitrile, or vinyl gloves are available and being worn. Any additional PPE required by the SDS is available and being worn. Skin-cleaning supplies are available. Waste containers and a disposal plan are ready.

6. Organize Tools and Supplies

All required materials are on site and inspected. Part A containers are separated from Part B containers. Clean measuring containers are available for Part A and Part B. Separate premixing paddles or stir sticks are available for Part A and Part B. Properly sized drill mixer and paddle are available. Clean mixing pails are available. Second clean mixing pails are available when that quality-control step will be used. Roller pans and liners are available. Brushes and small rollers are ready for cutting in. More roller covers, frames, liners, buckets, and disposable supplies are available than expected to be needed. Masking materials are ready. Physical barriers, signs, and caution tape are ready. Permanent lighting is operating whenever practical, or temporary lighting has been arranged to resemble it.

7. Assign Crew Responsibilities

Person responsible for mixing is identified. Person responsible for carrying or transferring material is identified. Person responsible for cutting in is identified. Person or persons responsible for rolling are identified. Everyone understands the installation sequence. Everyone understands the starting point, stopping points, and exit route. Everyone understands that the mixer is not to be interrupted once mixing begins.

8. Measure and Mix

Part A is premixed thoroughly. Part B is premixed thoroughly using a separate paddle or stir stick. Part A and Part B containers are protected from cross-contamination. Correct mix ratio has been confirmed. Components are measured accurately using separate clean containers. Both measured components are placed beside the mixing pail for visual verification before combining. Part B is added into Part A unless product-specific instructions state otherwise. Complete measured quantities are transferred into the mixing pail. Paddle size is appropriate for the batch size and mixing vessel. Batch is mixed for at least three minutes or for the product-specified time. Paddle is moved throughout the entire batch. Sides, bottom, and lower corners are mixed thoroughly. Excessive air is not whipped into the material. Mixed material is transferred to a second clean pail and hand-stirred when that additional quality-control step is used. Any questionable batch is set aside rather than installed.

9. Apply the Coating

Only manageable batch sizes are mixed. Mixed epoxy is transferred from the mixing pail as soon as practical. Large batches are divided into shallow containers or roller pans when appropriate. Coverage rate has been confirmed before beginning. Roller pans or application containers are positioned before mixing begins. Anti-skid aggregate is added only after Parts A and B have been completely mixed. Anti-skid aggregate has been measured by volume, not by weight. Aggregate remains uniformly suspended throughout application. Application proceeds according to the planned sequence. Natural stopping points have been identified before coating begins.

10. Maintain a Wet Edge and Recoat Properly

A continuous wet edge is maintained whenever practical. Lap lines are avoided. Stopping points occur at doorways, drains, control joints, expansion joints, or other natural breaks whenever practical. Recoat window has been confirmed before additional coats are applied. If the recoat window has been exceeded, the surface has been mechanically abraded as required. All sanding dust has been removed before recoating.

11. Protect the Finished Installation

Foot traffic is prevented until the coating has cured sufficiently. Water is kept off the coating during cure. Dust and construction debris are prevented from contaminating the coating. Other trades understand the area is closed. Physical barriers have been installed wherever practical. Warning signs have been posted. Final inspection has been completed before releasing the installation.
